Excitement Triggers💥

When are you truly at your best? Usually, it's when you're engaged and excited by the task in front you, right?
But what about when you're in a funk, the task doesn't appeal and you just can't get going, how can you trigger excitement then?
A client recently came to me wanting to explore just this. Thankfully, excitement is something I'm pretty good at, so together we explored the following strategies:
🗣️Change your self-talk: Instead of thinking "I am so unmotivated"; consciously say aloud, "I am so excited!". This simple cognitive shift helps your brain adopt a "challenge" mindset, leading to better performance and more positive feelings.
🏃Move your body: Do a few jumping jacks, walk around, or dance to music that pumps you up.
💡Embrace spontaneity: Do something you wouldn't normally do. Work in a different environment, do the task standing up, invite new perspectives in any way you can!
⚡️Connect with someone and borrow their energy: Energy and happiness are infectious, call/spend time with/surround yourself with people who can help lift your own state.
🎥 Watch a morale boosting video: I like Al Pacino’s famous speech from Any Given Sunday – “Take back those inches!”
🌻 Go outside: Feel the air on your face, move your body, connect with nature. If you can't do this, open a window.
🔚 Focus on the outcome, not the task: Instead of thinking about the effort of washing dishes, focus on the excitement of waking up to a clean kitchen tomorrow morning!
🎁 High-value rewards: Up to 75% of personal motivation comes from the reward at stake, so promise yourself a reward (like a favourite snack or episode of a show) once you have completed a task.
🆚 Do the opposite: If you feel like doing nothing, do the exact opposite by going outside. If you feel like isolating, phone a friend. Doing what you don't want to do is a core part of breaking a low-motivation cycle.
❄️ Take a cold reset: have a cold shower, splash some water on your face, or have a shot of an ice-cold drink.
💖 Romanticise Simple Moments: Light a candle while working or play a favourite film soundtrack while doing chores to make the "now" feel more vibrant.
How do you trigger excitement and get yourself going for a night out, a boring task or doing the dishes?
A small action can make all the difference. Your suggestions might really help someone today (on Blue Monday), and going forwards!
